Posters ñ More than Just Clutter
Posters can be found on the walls of many, if not most, teenagerís bedrooms. But, these large graphic sheets of paper provide many other purposes than just allowing young girls to wake up each morning to the smile at her favorite band member or actor. They are used frequently by different people with different goals and as a result can take many different forms. For most, the word posters will bring an image of a glossy picture hung on the wall or a bin full in a department store. But have you ever stopped and taken notice of how often theyíre used around you every day?
As a source of advertisement, strategically placed posters are quite effective in conveying a message. Think about a local band with little money to spend to promote their upcoming performances. They do have several options such as depending on word of mouth, getting the money together and preparing a television or radio ad, or even making an announcement at the venue before another bandís show but none of these are as cost effective as preparing several posters and placing them through the city. Telephone poles are large enough to accommodate a regular size sheet of paper and as long as a high-traffic location is chosen will result in the message being read several times over.
Aside from generating interest in an event, posters are commonly used as a method of motivation or inspiration. Probably one of the recognizable inspirational examples is the one depicting a cat, hanging from a tree branch by only his front paws and the text below stating ìHang in There Babyî. While being a very cute and comical example the message is enhanced by the image and when placed in an office for example, has the capability of encouraging the reader to continue on with his task. Using posters to motivate is an easy and effective way for employers, teachers, and motivators to convey important messages to their audiences.
Even with the many uses of posters including the two mentioned above, the most common use is, and is likely to remain, simple decoration. The images you can select are almost endless; everything from the previously mentioned Hollywood stars, and beautiful scenery to visual illusions and complex thoughts. At a much lower price point than paintings and prints, using posters as art will allow you the freedom to express yourself and create a living space full of images you enjoy.
Readily available, cost effective, and useful; posters are around us and not likely to leave. When a message needs communicating, or a space on the wall needs filling, a poster may just do the trick. Whether it be created by hand, computer or ordered from an online provider, it is guaranteed to convey the message at a fraction of the cost of other devices and grants much. The next time you see a teenagerís wall covered with so many images that you cannot see the paint, remember that she is using them as art and not just clutter on the wall.
